Now, unique ID numbers for ICSE students

Students appearing for their Indian School Certificate (ISC) and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) exams will get a seven digit unique identification code that will remain with them for life and enable them easily get documents like duplicate mark sheet without the regular hassles involved, from this year.

Though anxious about the new changes, schools in the City are optimistic that it will go a long way in helping the students. “For example, if a student moves to another school after Class 10, the code will help him get his documents directly from the Council within days. Instead of contacting the school for everything, the number will help him get things done on his own,” said Sudipta Mitra, English teacher at St Thomas Public School, New Thippasandara.

Under the earlier system, a student had to apply for duplicate marksheet through his school which would in turn apply for the marksheet to the board. The unique identity code will replace the index and the registration number of students and its introduction is part of a modernisation drive of the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE).

This involves taking a number of processes online, which were earlier done manually, according to Blesy Binoy John, principal, Ryan International School, Yelahanka. “Earlier, most of the paper work needed to be done manually. The new changes will enable us to do everything online. In case of loopholes, say in filling up forms, it can be easily rectified,” said Blesy. “Going online means paper work will also be greatly reduced and things will be more transparent and faster,” said Sribala, teacher and coordinator at Carmel School, Padmanabhanagar.

Since this is the first time that a new mechanism is put in place, some schools are slightly anxious about the move. “We are obviously anxious and are keeping our fingers crossed. We were a bit reluctant in the beginning. However, with the help of the board and helplines that provide us all the information, we have managed to get things working. It will help ensure transparency and convenience in the long run,” added Blesy.

A substantial part of the Indian School Certificate and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) would go online this year, making the examination and evaluation processes transparent, accurate and time saving, education authorities said.

"We plan using IT in a way yet to be used by any Indian education board.
