Keshari ICSE / ISC eBooks Chapter - 18 Chord Properties Of a Circle Circle : A closed curve traced out by a moving point, at a fixed distant from a fixed point is called a circle. The fixed point is called the centre, the fixed distance is called the radius. The path traced out is called the circumference. In the figure along side, O is the centre, OP is the radius and APBD is the circumference.
A straight line terminating at both ends by the circumference is called a chord. A chord passing through the centre is called the diameter. A diameter divides a circle into two equal parts called a semi-circle. A chord divides a circle into two parts called segments of the circle, the smaller is minor segment and larger is major segment. An arc is a part of the circumference of a circle. CQD is an arc. An arc less than a semi-circle is called minor arc. The other part left out is called the major arc.
