Example - 1 : If (-5, k), (3, 5) and (7, 5) are colinear find the value of k.

Solution : Let A = (-5, k), B = (3, 5) and C = (7, 5)

Since the point are colinear

 

Example - 2 : Find the equation of straight line parallel to 5y = 2x + 3 and passing through the point (1, 1)

Solution : The equation 5y = 2x + 3 can be written as.

Now, the required line is parallel to

(i) Therefore its m = 2/5

of line whose slope is 2/3 and passing through (1, 1) is

y – 1 = 2/5 (x - 1)
