Example – 1 : Find the length of a straight line joining P (2, 3) and Q (3, 5).

Solution :

Example - 2 : Find the mid point of the line joining P(2, 3) and Q(4, 5).

Solution : Let M be mid-point of PQ whose coordinates is (x, y). PR parallel to x-axis, MN and QR parallel to y–axis are drawn.

In is the mid-point of PQ and MN is parallel to QR.

We see that the x-coordinate of M is the average of x-coordinates of P and Q.

Similarly the y-coordinate of M may also be the average of the y - coordinates

y = (3 + 5) / 2 = 4

Midpoint of PQ is (3, 4)
